Join The Powerhouse Project, Barclays Women's Super League, and Barclays Women's Championship to craft a live match day story!

The Powerhouse Project and The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited joined forces to support young women taking their first steps into the media industry.

Working in collaboration with The Powerhouse Project, the league hosted Social Media Storytelling Workshops designed to empower young women aged 18–21 with storytelling, technical skills, and hands-on experience in sports media.

The workshops taught participants how to create mobile-first social content for Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL) and Barclays Women’s Championship (BWC) matchdays throughout the 2024/25 season, providing additional coverage of the women’s professional leagues.

Alongside supporting the development of the next generation of young women in the sports media industry, the collaboration brought even more behind-the-scenes content to supporters while supporting the league’s broadcast partners and sponsors with enhanced coverage.

The collaboration built on The Powerhouse Project’s ongoing work within the women’s sport media space, following the launch of Pixel FC Academy in partnership with Google Pixel. The Academy aimed to help aspiring female creators break into the sports media industry through a comprehensive five-month programme featuring masterclasses led by industry leaders across social content creation, broadcasting, and written journalism.

As identified by Google Pixel, YouGov data showed that 70 per cent of female sports fans aged 16–24 believe sports media is a male-dominated industry, with 63 per cent stating they would be more likely to apply if they saw more women in prominent roles. Initiatives such as the Social Media Storytelling Workshops and Pixel FC Academy represented a concerted effort across the industry to help close this gap.

Nikki Doucet, CEO of WPLL, said:
“As we continue to tell the stories of our leagues in a distinctive and entertaining way and bring fans closer to the players and clubs, our work with The Powerhouse Project will enable us to serve our fans with even more content as well as upskilling the next generation of female content creators.

“It’s a fantastic initiative, we’re incredibly proud to be playing our part in it and we are very excited to see the content produced by exciting new talent alongside enhancing the coverage of our game.”
